1 cup shortening
2 cups (packed) brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup sour milk
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
3 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Filling:
2 cups finely cut dates
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Thoroughly mix shortening, brown sugar, eggs, milk and vanilla. Sift all dry ingredients; combine with first mixture. Drop from a teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheet.
Filling: Combine all ingredients. Cook until thickened. Drop 1/4 teaspoon filling onto each cookie; cover with 1/2 teaspoon dough. Bake at 375 to 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
