2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick butter
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup milk
2 medium-sized tart apples
Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the cheese and toss lightly to blend with the dry ingredients. Combine the egg and the milk; add to the dry ingredients and stir until blended. Spread the batter evenly in a buttered and floured 9-inch square pan. Pare, quarter and core the apples and cut them into 1/4-inch slices. Press the apple slices diagonally into the dough, with rounded edges up, about 1/2 inch apart. Bake for 35 minutes at 375 degrees. Meanwhile prepare the glaze.
