1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup molasses
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon each cinnamon, clove and ginger
2 teaspoons soda
1 cup boiling water
Cream the butter, add the sugar and beat until light. Add the molasses and well-beaten eggs. Sift the flour with the spices and add. Mix in last the soda added to the boiling water. Bake in a long pan about 40 minutes at 325-degrees f. Do not add more flour to the batter if it seems thin. Always get light molasses; the dark spoils gingerbread. This may be iced with a thin chocolate frosting.
