2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs, beaten
2 cup flour
1 teaspoon soda
2 to 4 teaspoons cinnamon
1 to 2 teaspoons nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups finely chopped apples
1 cup chopped nuts
Sauce:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup half-and-half
Cream sugar and butter; add eggs. Sift dry ingredients; add to batter. Add apples and nuts. Pour into a greased floured 9 x 13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 300 degrees; bake for 45 minutes longer.
Sauce: Cook all ingredients over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture coats a spoon. Serve over warm cake.
